It is with words as with sunbeams—the more they are condensed,
the deeper they burn. (Robert Southey)
Maximum information, minimum number of syllables. (Allen Ginsberg)
The natural object is always the adequate symbol. (Ezra Pound)
Write with nouns and verbs, not with adjectives and adverbs. The adjective hasn't been built that can pull a weak or inaccurate noun out of a tight place. (William Strunk and E.B. White)
Most of what you need to know about good writing style can be found in two books: Strunk and White’s Elements of Style, and The Chicago Manual of Style.
A few tips are worth noting here.
1. While several styles for time of day are generally accepted (8 AM, 8:00 AM, 8:00 a.m., etc.), for the sake of standardization we’ll use 8:00 a.m.
2. Please pay attention to apostrophes, especially its and it’s. If you don’t mean to say “it is” or “it has,” then the correct word is its.
3. Simplify. In most writing, “use” is better than “utilize”; “now” is better than “at this point in time”; “as needed” is better than “on an as-needed basis”; etc.
4. The preferred style for phone numbers is 770 555-5555.
5. Only one space is needed after the period in a sentence, not two. Most of us learned two spaces many years ago, but it’s not necessary and it’s not done by professionals—just look at any current newspaper, magazine, or book.
6. Feel free to contact me directly if you find any errors (misspelled names or worrdds, incorrect punctuation, etc.), or if you have suggestions for additional content. Good quality close-up photos of students’ faces are welcome for the Faces photo album. Please adjust the image quality to keep the file size to 100 KB or smaller. Space is limited, so priority will be given to the best photos. Include your child’s first name, and a statement that you are the parent or legal guardian and are giving permission to post the photo on the Lake Windward website. Only first names will be used in the captions.
7. Changes to official website information such as personnel, titles, policies, schedules, etc., should be requested through the school administration.
Thanks, and enjoy.
