Media Center Policies

Student Checkout
Students in grades 1–2 may check out two books at a time. Students in grades 3–5 may check out three books. All books are due in two weeks. Reference books are checked out for overnight only.

Overdue notices are sent out weekly. Students who have overdue items will not be able to check out anything else until the overdue is resolved. Fines are not charged for late items, but students will be charged for lost or damaged materials.
Schedule
The Media Center operates on an open, flexible schedule. Students may come individually or in small groups (limit 4 students) with a Media Pass (student library card). Each student is responsible for his/her own book exchange. Whole class lessons are scheduled with the Media Specialist.
Orientation
Orientation is held each fall to instruct students in Media Center procedures. After that, teachers should send a classmate with new students to show them how to check out books, etc.

To maintain an atmosphere for instruction and research, all students must work quietly in the Media Center. Students who are disturbing others will be asked to leave the Media Center after a warning.

2008 Book Fair Thank You
We did it again! It was a very successful book fair and over $15,000 worth of books were sold. The media center has some lovely new books, which are already in great demand! The children had a wonderful time browsing through the books and choosing what to buy. Class teachers report that book fair always stimulates their students to read more. Not only do they enjoy the books they bought, but they also pour into the media center to see which ones we have pulled for the library. Teachers greatly appreciated the books they were able to choose for their class libraries, using the gift certificates donated by the children. Thank you for your support. The proceeds from the book fair will be used to buy new books and DVDs. Some will also be spent on upgrading our technology.

We would like to thank all the wonderful parent volunteers who gave so generously of their time to helping during book fair. We really appreciate all their hard work. Special thanks are due to Julie Barnette and Jane Anne Stokes who always put in many extra hours to help us.

Famous Illustrator Visits Lake Windward
Michael P. White, a well-known artist and children’s book illustrator, spent the day working with the students in the media center. Mr. White has illustrated three books, “Harriet’s Horrible Hair,” “The Secret of Old Zeb,” and the award-winning “The Library Dragon.” He is currently working with author Carmen Agra Deedy on a sequel to “The Library Dragon.”

His program is called “The Start of Something Big,” and it is aptly named. Step by step, he led the students through the process of creating a picture, using simple shapes, and drawing bold lines. He encouraged them to “think big” and not to worry about mistakes they made. He stimulated their imaginations, by drawing whimsical animals, like the “Tooth Beary,” and the “Peanut Butter and Jellyfish.” Before long, all the children were busy drawing with him and making suggestions for funny animals. They were thrilled by his drawings and delighted by his quick repartee and silly puns. Mr. White told them to be sure to sign their pictures because one day they might be famous illustrators and writers. By the end of the day, they believed him! After the session, one third grader was so proud of what she had created that she wrote, “I am keeping my pictures forever!” This could be the start of something big.

Fortunately, Michael P. White left his beautiful line drawings and airbrush paintings with us, so we will have the pleasure of enjoying his pictures forever.
